Stump grinding · Panama City

Stump Grinding in Panama City, FL

Ground out below grade so you can sod, plant or build over it — and the grindings taken away rather than left in a mound.

Why there are so many

Panama City has a lot of old stumps

A great many trees came down across Bay County in a short space of time in 2018, and a lot of them were cut flush and left. We still get called to stumps from that period, now soft, hollowing and full of ants, sitting in the middle of a lawn somebody wants to level.

Older stumps are not necessarily easier. Rotten wood can hide roots and buried debris, and on the older streets there is often a sprinkler line, a cable or a septic component nobody remembers putting in.

What drives the price

Size is only part of it

  • Diameter and root flare. We price on the flare, not the cut face. A stump that looks small at the top can be much wider at the ground.
  • Access. The grinder needs a route in. A stump behind a narrow gate or up a slope takes longer to reach than to grind.
  • What is buried near it. Utilities, irrigation and old kerbing all mean working more carefully. Call 811 before we come and it is a smoother day for everyone.
  • How deep you need it. Sodding over needs less depth than planting a replacement tree in the same spot.

Booked at the same time as a removal it is meaningfully cheaper, because the machine is already on the trailer and the crew is already there.

Afterwards

What you are left with

Grinding produces a surprising volume of chip — more than the stump appeared to contain. We take it away and backfill with soil unless you want the grindings left for mulch, which some people do.

Roots running away from the stump are a separate question. Surface roots crossing a lawn can be ground where it is safe to do so, but taking large structural roots out near a foundation is not something we will do casually.

Questions

Panama City — common questions

How deep do you grind?

Below grade — typically enough to sod or turf over. If you intend to plant another tree in the same hole, say so, because that needs to go deeper and we price it differently.

Do you take the grindings away?

Yes, unless you would rather keep them. We backfill with soil and leave the area level.

Can you grind a stump close to the house?

Usually yes. We work more slowly near foundations, paving and utilities, and we will tell you at the estimate if anything looks too tight to do safely.

Will the roots keep sprouting?

Some species send up suckers after grinding. It settles down, and we will tell you if the species you have is a likely one.
