Stump Grinding

Stump grinding in Bay, Walton, Gulf & Okaloosa County

The stump is the half of the job most people forget about. We grind below grade so you can sod, plant or build over it and forget the tree was ever there.

Why It Matters

Why leaving the stump causes problems

A stump isn’t just untidy. Left in the ground it creates several genuine issues.

It Attracts Pests

Decaying stumps draw termites, carpenter ants and beetles — and they don’t stay in the stump. On the Gulf Coast that’s a real risk to nearby structures.

It Keeps Sprouting

Many species send up suckers from the stump and roots for years. You end up mowing around a thicket where a tree used to be.

It Blocks The Space

You can’t sod, plant, pave or build over a stump. Grinding it turns dead ground back into usable yard.

It’s A Trip Hazard

Low stumps disappear into grass. They’re a hazard to mowers, kids and anyone walking the yard at dusk.

What’s Included

How we grind a stump

Ground Below Grade

We grind well below ground level rather than shaving the top flat, so the space is genuinely reusable.

Surface Roots Too

Where they matter, protruding surface roots get ground down as well — not just the trunk.

Utilities Checked First

We locate what’s underground before we start. Grinding into an irrigation line or a cable is an expensive mistake.

Grindings Handled

You can keep the mulch to backfill the hole, or we haul it away. Your call — tell us which.

Cheaper With A Removal

If we’re already on site taking the tree down, grinding the stump costs far less than bringing equipment back for a separate visit.

Access Assessed

Grinders need a route in. We check gate widths and ground conditions before quoting so there are no surprises.

Questions

Stump grinding FAQ

What does stump grinding cost?

Mostly it comes down to diameter, root spread and how easily we can get the grinder to it. A stump in an open front yard and the same stump behind a narrow side gate price very differently. Send a photo and we’ll give you a firm figure.

How deep do you grind?

Below grade — deep enough that you can sod, plant or pave over the spot. We don’t just shave the top off.

What happens to the wood chips?

Your choice. Most people have us backfill the hole with them, which settles over a few weeks. Otherwise we haul them off.

Is it cheaper if you remove the tree too?

Considerably. The equipment is already on site, so grinding at the same time avoids a second trip. Mention it when you ask for the removal estimate.

Will the roots keep growing?

No. Once the stump is ground out and the connection to the crown is gone, the root system dies off and decays in the ground.

Do you check for pipes and cables first?

Yes. We locate what’s underground before grinding — irrigation lines and utility runs near old trees are common.

“I had them remove a problemsome tree and grind a stump. Charged me what I believe was a very good price. They came when they promised and completed the job in a very professional manner.”
